BTA Q&A
We’ve been getting lots of questions regarding Bubble Tanks Arenas lately - although we’ve given you a TON of information already, we thought it might be nice to address a few of these questions. Here we go!
Q: Will your old tank designs be lost when you want to create a new one?
A: Nope! Just remember the names that you give your tanks (and their IDs). They’ll be submitted to our server so that every one of your tanks will be saved so create away!
Q: Why are you creating so many side-games? Why don’t you just concentrate on getting BTA out?
A: This is a question that requires lots of information. For more details check out this blog post. In short, we have five people on our team, four who do actual programming, art, etc. Any given game can only have a maximum of two people working on it at a time - otherwise file saving gets messed up, continuity is compromised, and the people get in each others way causing the process to go even slower. SO! BTA usually only has one or two people working on it at a time leaving our other Heroes doing nothing. So why not make some new smaller games that we can enjoy and profit from? Also, BTA is taking a long time to create because it’s incredibly intricate. Lots of important details must be seen to. Plus there’s a LOT of pressure on us to get this game right, so we’re not going to rush it.
Q: Why don’t you give the tanks the ability to carry around items like nails, or shoot fire?!
A: While we’ll be the first to admit that the Bubble Tanks series isn’t completely based on reality, we don’t want to get totally unrealistic here. We also don’t want to change the overall feel and aesthetic that BT fans have come to know and enjoy. We promise there will definitely be cool things for you to play with but they probably won’t include nails and fire.
Q: Why haven’t you posted anything about BTA in over a month!?!?!?!?!?!
A: With one or two people working on the game at once, things are moving slowly. But they ARE moving! The problem is that we don’t have a whole lot of new information at this point. We’re working very steadily toward giving you some new screen shots, info., and possibly videos in the future but we’re just not ready yet. Hang in there!
Q: When is BTA going to be released?
A: We’ve said it once, we’ve said it twice, we’ve said it a million times: We don’t know yet. There is NO release date planned at this point. We have a very private, very approximate calendar that we’re following but there’s really no telling right now. Please don’t ask us to share it with you, because we won’t.
Q: Do you start working on new games right when you announce them?
A: No, not always. We have to get to a good stopping point with other games before beginning new ones. When we announce new games we’re mostly telling you what’s on our agenda for the future. We’re letting you know first because you’re our loyal, awesome, wonderful blog visitors. So when we said we were making BTA we didn’t start on it RIGHT that second. You get the picture.
Thanks for sticking it out with us, as usual! We hope you’ll continue to enjoy the great games that we’re creating in the meantime. Oh yeah, and just because we don’t answer every question doesn’t mean that we didn’t see it (we did!) or that we don’t care (we do!). We just can’t answer every single question and sometimes, we’re busy! Thanks gamey people!

Can two people make a tank that has the same name? Or would it not be based on name just ID number?
I would think the name is how you remember it and the id is how the server does, tanks with the same names should have different numbers.
If there are tanks that you can just start with i would like to start with a cool design and add on to it.

Ah it’s good to hear some news again, I was losing faith and so decided to redecorate my room, and what a bad idea that was… It’s nice to know that you’re getting along okay with no further problems, and hopefully you’ll post again soon, so that we get less of the spam like the other blog post >.>

Alright guys. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you for the update. I’d rather have you take your time and release an amazing game, rather than you rush it, and release a mediocre game. I have full confidence that this will be amazing.

In order to be a game tester you have to be able to play games and give feed back. In order to be a game tester for US you pretty much have to know us in some way. We have LOTS of testers.

You WILL be able to simply load up pre-made tanks by Hero Interactive if you don’t feel like making your own.
You WILL also be able to load up an existing tank made by us, yourself, or someone else and then modify that tank.
finaly a new post, take your time guys and make this game as good as possible but please dont leave us in the dark make new posts even if there not much

this is great, can’t wait to play it, just got a new gaming laptop so add in all the effects u want and make it as amazing as possible, i don’t care if i have to wait 5 more years for it to come out i’ll still wait.

@Dragon, I doubt getting a new high tech gaming laptop isn’t going to change much when playing a regular flash game…. Unless your last one sucked horribly.

AC/DC, that’s me! I’m the fifth person. I do blog stuff, the newsletter, some other community things, and stuff around the office. But I don’t know anything about programming and such.

….ahh by asking that question there progress went down by another 3% it is now at -70% done

Will there be a version released for iPhone/iPod touch? I’m not sure how Bubble Tanks could be played on a touchscreen, but I’ve seen it done on other games.

Whoo, finally another blog. I’m only syaing that because I hate scrolling, lol. Not like it matters; after comment 30, nobody new reads the top part anyway. Sigh. You guys shouldn’t even announce stuff and just say “Here it is!”. That’s what I am starting to do (as soon as I complete my advannced computer animation class). Maybe a trailer or sneak peak to keep people guessing, but nothing too big. As an added bonus, people are more syked about a game they see little of in advance (as far as I can tell). Look for a trailer for my first apocalyptic CGI movie trailer late 2010! Note: I am not the only one working on this project. I am just the software supplier and project lead.
Also, another piece of advice. My friends and I spent the whole first week designing a system so that we DON’T get in each others’ way. We have a group of 8 people on the project and 2 working on media, but we don’t get in each others’ way. For the most part, communicate well, and you won’t have to worry. granted, we don’t have interns to babysit as we are not officially a company and currently make no profit (no material out yet)
If you feel I am bragging or anything, go ahead and delete them. I am only trying to help.

Dude….. I know, I read the post. that, ladies and gentleman, is how I feel about this darn game right now. I’m not lying when I say, “take your time on this game, so that it looks and feels professional, hopefully proportional to how much time has been put into this game.” If this holds still until December or so, then it would have been a full year before the games’ release! I guess I am complaining right now, but I know that I’m not the only person getting incredibly frustrated at this games’ progress/release.
You are right, You have given up tons of information about this game already, but it feels like, after 8-10 months of telling us about this game, that it could be ready in 2 months, at the most. *steam!* Whatever..
and in case you guys take this all out of context, I’m definitely not asking for a release date..so don’t you think about making me look any stupider!

I have a few more, hopefully simple questions:
1) You mentioned before about your business, and that you have to limit games to get them out on time, like with the weapon counts. So my question is…will you make addons for BTA or expansions over time to increase these numbers or what?
2) How exactly will “armor” of your tank work? I assume the yellow bit is the “weak” point, so if we are making a big guy we need to protect the yellow bit…I assume class 4 is going to be the size of the those MASSIVE guys in BT2? That’ll be sweet :D. So for a question, bigger bubbles are stronger and little bubbles are weaker? Or is that just a cosmetic thing?
3) If you do get around to adding new weapon types, can we have things like the “infection” and “missile” type weapons from BT2. Or maybe even a physics based weapon? Like a bubble whip or a spikey bubble ball on a bubble chain that you hurl around by moving about.
4)Bubble count, on the old pick of a class 3 it shows 0/13 bubbles used….is that all? For a class 3 based of the size of the area you are allowed to work with, shouldnt it be more? I have no idea how your values currently work, but i reckon it shoould go like this:
T1: 4 Bubbles + 2 weapons max
T2: 9 Bubbles “”
T3: 15 Bubbles + 3 weapons max
T4: 22 Bubbles + 2 Heavy weapons and 2 other
Even then I think thats too limiting…we should be able to have as many as we can afford/fit into, each of the Tiers. Because IMO T1 looks as if you could fit around…12 small bubbles + a few medium 1’s, T2 looks like it about 15/5/2 S/M/L size bubbles, T3 Looks as if it could fit either 25/12/8 and T4…well…double that? lol

I beat bt2 i will be a beta tester of bta.
i dont hink they will have beta testers. If they do, I would love to be 1. And BT2 wasnt hard to beat. It was just awesome how u could take so many paths and kill so many different enemies. BTW I’ve beaten BT2 with every tank there is and i have seen/killed every enemy.

Steph said before that to be a beta tester you have to be tied in some way to HI. IE: you have to know them personally, it’s not enough to be a loyal fan who likes the game.

when you said the designs will go to your servers i would think that would take up a great deal of room after a while, so this leads me to my question what are your server specifications?
in bbta is there gonna be special prizes and secret extras
well you will most likely have to unlock most of the bubbles that you use to create a bubble tank and im sure that there will be other unlockables as well if not… well that would be dumb and there would be no reason to continue playing the game after a certain point

maybe you should make a percentage bar the shows like 60% or 70% and show that.
They should have like an arena boss for every set or so, and they could make a sandbox set of arenas, and those would have tanks made by other people.
I just thought of something that most people like, and even though I read all the comments about BTA (yes, I got plenty of free time) I never heard anyone saying about highscores.The highscores (if any) should be for surviving in a sequences of arenas, each time getting harder and with no recover in between them.
PS: I like the sandbox idea and I LOVE HI games

It IS possible for us to approximate. We’re just not going to. We’ve been burned by that in the past. This time you’ll just have to wait until we’re good and ready.
video games usaly take at least 2 years some vidio games take up to 5
vulcan that’s for games like LoZ that make millions of dollars and are widely enjoyed by ppl who are willing to pay 50$ for it. Also, just a suggestion to ppl at HI: don’t announce a game until just a month or two before you believe you might be completed, that way you wont have annoying kiddies jumping down your throat demanding a release date. You could just say “within a couple of months” and no one would complain.
As I understand it, Halo took years to come out, and that’s one of the best games in history.
Can you please make some more screen shots? Or a demo video. Or, could you make an awesome upgrade plan like, ad a machine gun, then you can upgrade the equiped one? Please?

First thing, some people think that you DO know whats going on, and two monts later they get all mad at HI because they haven’t realesed it yet. Even if it is a reasonable guess. Say its a guess, only members HI can make approximent dates for things like that.

Making a game takes an extremly long time, especialy considering that they have to draw every enemy, bubble, shot, damage, reaction, movment, color, detail, light reflections, bla bla bla. THat can take hours to make 3 enemys so shut up you freaking commenters.
OH MY GOD, really? Really? You are making decent games in a few weeks, but this is taking more than a year?!? Either you need to dumb it down a bit, wake up the two working on it, replace them, or make sure this is the best flash game in the history of the world. If you don’t, there will be a LOT of angry people who wasted a good portion of their lives going to this blog to see if Some half-decent games is out yet.

Herointeractive are the ones creating the game, being paid for the game, and ultimately in charge of the game, so please just let them do their thing. Waiting for this game will not kill you, and neither will playing it and being disappointed. So please just give them a chance to complete what is obviously a very complex game.

We work eight hour days, five days per week. That’s 40 hours per week and about 180 hours per month.

We’ve learned from our past mistakes which actually resulted from telling people when the game would be released. Listen, i love your games, they’re fun as heck. I know you’ve said you have a private calender for when you will be releasing games, and that you won’t be sharing that, but isn’t that a little unproffesional? I’m no expert, but it seems to me that all big names for products post their new items release dates. Think about it, microsoft announced the release date for the xbox, then the 360 after it. Bungie always gives dates for when cool new games are on their way out. They always give an exact date for the release, then it happens. It sort of makes you guys seem amatuers. I hate to be so critical, but i guess i’m getting a little impatient for BTA’s release. No offense guys.

bob, all professional companies release dates for things when they’re good and ready. They wouldn’t release those dates if they didn’t think they could actually get things done by then. We may give you dates! Really! But we don’t know when it’ll be done yet (for the thousandth time) so we’re not going to be pushed, bullied, or otherwise forced to give you a date when there just isn’t one.
Again, I’m sorry that you’ve all been waiting so long, but we really appreciate you coming back and visiting and commenting. We’re so happy that there’s so much anticipation for this game - so I’m sure you can see why there’s so much pressure for us to do a good job. As of now, there just isn’t a release date.

In the next post, you should tell us more about what part your working on, what you’ve done and what else you have left to do. Everyone is begging you for a release date because they like to know if they should be checking back here every day to see if there is new info or if there IS a release date. While I understand that most of what you’d be telling us we wouldn’t understand, because only a few (if not none of us) are avid game developers, but people like to hear these things. For example, a lot of us like to see a loading bar when we’re installing or downloading something to our computers. The reason that they have that is almost to give the consumers a false sense of accomplishment, leading them on to a feeling of renewed excitement. Everyone likes to have something to look forward to. Its what keeps us all going, not just here, but throughout our entire lives. Plus, It’ll keep us off your back for a while.
You guys at Hero Interactive are doing a great job making these games and I know that we all appreciate the work that you do. So, just do us a teeny tiny favor and take my idea into consideration on your next post.

Hey Krakos… if u look a lowest part of the browser will see a “Comments for this post will be closed on 1 December 2009.” text… Figures that a new post at december will say that BTA will be complete at 2010. But on that post it will say that tha beta will be gived out only at 2012 even than the beta will suck ballz and we have to wait ’till 2020.Thats when we finaly could play this games.
!AND! Rigth after (like 1 hour) they give us the game to play another post will come saying “Whoops”
And the post will containe a message:

Yes Wooterman, you’re wrong. I think…I’m not sure that I fully understood the comment. Those things that say “Comments for this post will be closed on 1 December 2009″ are just there in case people stop commenting. If you keep commenting, the post will remain open for longer. It has absolutely nothing to do with when the game is coming out or when a new blog post will be made. Also, our computer didn’t fail, delete itself, and explode. We lost SOME information on our hard drive that set us back a LITTLE but we quickly recovered that. You won’t have to wait until 2020 to play BTA.

This may be a pointless question that you cant answer right now but how long do you think it will take this game to load?
ThatOneGuy, while I have no affiliation with HI whatsoever, I can answer that question… Sort of.
It depends on your Video card. There are two types: Integrated Graphics Media cards: These are previously installed into your computers RAM and are non upgradable. They are mainly just for video playback, music playback, and basic internet operations.
Discrete video solutions: These are from brands like ATI Radeon. They are performance graphics cards which are used for Hi-Def video playback, Intense gaming sessions, and browsing graphics intensive internet sites.
You know your computer better than we do though, how fast does it usually run? Only you can answer this question.
Don’t certain games take longer though because your loading a lot of data?

It has almost been a year . i think its fair to say that until we see another post the game is just as likely to come out tomorrow as it is to take three more months. Besides, we have already seen the tank editor, tank designs, and the fact that HI has been working on the same thing for such a long time. Everyone with there fan sites and constant blog posts are giving HI a new meaning for free publicity.By the way we are going on about this we are lucky if HI does not just finnish the game and hold off releasing it while we go crazy and end up visiting the blog everyday. (that’s probably not the case) but i have seriously seen some console games take less time then this. One thing you should take out from this post is that whatever HI is doing bubble tanks arena is going to be the best flash game ever made maybe even beating ’sonny’ and ‘fancy pants 2′.

hey omygod. when you said i have seen consle games take less time than this i dont think you were taking to thought that that with consle games they have about 5-8 people working on each section at the same time like artwork, locomotion ect.

true dave… and as for your post script i think jeff is right about them only posting when there is something to post about. i don’t know if they’ll be releasing it on christmas or easter or Hanukkah because they probably don’t work on holidays and the way they are exited for BTA just as much as we are, i think they will be releasing it ASAP.
An update would be really appreciated just so we know that your actually working on it and so we have something new to talk about

honestly people, imagine, perhaps, for just a momment, that you are the HI crew. you currently feel like a walking pile of crap and you have snot driping from every hole you can think of and a couple more. now add the fact that your “fans” are constantly whining about “oh, we love this game and we want it to be the best game on the face of the earth but make it NOW”. how do you feel?

Its been almost like, 3 months since you have given any FORM of an update… Why aren’t you filling us in the the game progress?
I’m starting to wonder if it is even worth checking back. There haven’t been any updates since august 5th. That is 82 days or about 1,968 hours or about 118,080 minutes or about 7,084,800 seconds. That is way too long!

i stopped checking in a while ago because ther have been no new updates, after 3 weeks of not checking, i c that no new update has been formed. thats kinda dissapointing guys. it couldnt b that hard to make one game.
aha, yert, you have to consider: to make a decent game, you have to make every single sprite work as it should, you have to program each individual bubble to move in exactly the precise manner, because if you make even one mistake in the programing of a sprite, then every sprite that interacts with that one will be affected- possibly in a way that could reverberate throughout the entire programing matrix and completely destroy the game. so, you have to program each sprite(and each pixel on the sprite), check for errors, reprogram, recheck, test individualy, test in a group, retest and retest: all to get one bubble tank checked off. now imagine the ammount of variables that are involved in the tank creator, the number of combinations they have to program, and generaly everything.
personal, in that light(and in addition to being sick), i think the HI team is doing a great job. keep up the good work!

WOW!!! I love BT and all of its branches. I had never been to the HI website but when I saw this on the homepage I started freaking out about how impressed i will be with this game. But then I read the blog and comments and when people said they’d been waiting for months for this game my spirits died… But I have no doubt that this game will be worth the wait. Generic encouraging comment!!!
